Tosba Mezcal Tepextate
Tosba Mezcal Tepextate is a wild-varietal artisanal mezcal from cousins Edgar Gonzalez Ramirez and Elisandro Gonzalez Molina in the Sierra Norte (Sierra Juarez) mountains of far northern Oaxaca — made from Tepextate (Agave marmorata), among the longest-maturing wild agave varietals at 25–30+ years. Tosba is named from the Zapotec for “only one,” reflecting the cousins’ status as the only active mezcaleros in their community when they started.
Tepextate grows in rocky, mountainous terrain, with the long maturation cycle producing exceptionally complex floral, herbal, and mineral character. Tosba’s Sierra Norte location (rather than the more famous Sierra Sur of Santiago Matatlán) gives the spirit a distinct northern Oaxacan terroir. The cousins’ sustainability ethos — planting more agave than they harvest and growing predominantly from seed — is particularly important for wild varietals like Tepextate.
