Macurichos Mezcal Ancestral Tobala
Macurichos Mezcal Ancestral Tobala is a wild-varietal ancestral-method mezcal from Gonzalo Martinez in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca — one of only a handful of distillers still producing using ancestral methods including clay pot stills. Tobala (Agave potatorum) is a small, wild, high-altitude agave varietal prized for the delicate, refined, and mineral-driven mezcal it produces.
The Ancestral classification is the most traditional production tier in the official mezcal categories, more restrictive than Artesanal in its requirements. Macurichos’ clay pot still distillation produces a distinctly textured Tobala, with mineral and floral character preserved without the influence of copper. Wild Tobala’s small plant size and slow maturation make this one of the more expensive single-varietal mezcal expressions.
