Kavalan Vinho Barrique Cask Strength is produced at the King Car Kavalan Distillery in Yilan County, Taiwan — winner of the 2015 World Whiskies Awards World’s Best Single Malt. Fully matured in used American oak wine barrels that have been toasted and recharred, combining the fruity vanilla character of wine cask maturation with the smoky depth of recharring. Bottled at natural cask strength without dilution.

Taiwan’s subtropical climate creates some of the fastest-maturing whisky conditions in the world — the warm temperatures and dramatic humidity fluctuations accelerate the interaction between spirit and wood, producing in 3–5 years what might take 10–12 years in Scottish conditions. Kavalan’s Vinho (Portuguese for “wine”) Barrique specifically uses barrels from wine producers, the toasting and recharring process reviving the wood’s extractive capacity for additional maturation cycles.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Fruity vanilla, tropical fruit, caramel, and toasted oak. Palate: Rich and concentrated — tropical fruit, vanilla, chocolate, and wood spice at full cask strength. Finish: Long and warming.
