Serbia is the world's largest exporter of slivovitz and second-largest plum producer. For Bistra, selected ripe plums are crushed, the pits separated, and the mash fermented with regional yeasts before being double-distilled. The spirit then rests in oak casks of up to 5,000 liters for aromatic completion, followed by further aging in stainless steel before bottling. Its signature almond note comes from amygdalin naturally present in the plum seeds.
